W(h)ate(ve)r one said, Lata rocked

Hindi film buffs could instantly gauge that the soundtrack of Maachis was going to be an album of the highest quality on seeing Lata Mangeshkar’s name in the credits. And she was the sole female vocalist.

Undoubtedly, Paani Paani Re was the most famous of her four solos in the film. It was five minutes and nine seconds long.

Of course, here the word paani is preceded by khaare, which is Hindi for salty. In the context of the film, it implies tears.

The track, which was penned by Gulzar, was composed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
